Stephanie Skinner

Lawyer Stephanie Skinner comes to us from Arizona. Before immigrating to Canada a decade ago, Stephanie lived along the US/Mexican border.

Stephanie earned a dual Juris Doctor and Masters of Social Work degree from the University of Windsor and a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science (Honours) from Simon Fraser University.

While attending law school, Stephanie was president of Women in the Law, a volunteer in legal clinics where she handled both criminal and family law matters, and was a law clerk at the Ontario Court of Justice. She summered with the BC Civil Liberties Association and gained valuable experience in public interest/human rights advocacy and high impact litigation.

Stephanie has a particular interest in issues involving systematic rights violations and deprivation of liberty in the criminal, mental health and immigration context. She is a passionate advocate who views a career in criminal defense as an effective means of reducing undue impositions of the state and protecting those whose fundamental rights have been violated.

Here is what one of Stephanie’s clients said recently:

My daughter was a ‘new’ driver who recently found herself facing a number of driving infractions.  One of them being major, and affecting her licence immensely. Feeling these charges unfair and unwarranted, we had decided to dispute them.

Being a new driver, this meant she would have lost her licence, something that Stephanie had thankfully helped us to avoid. I had contacted Stephanie Skinner for a consultation and after speaking with her felt confident that she could help us.

She did a wonderful job helping us through this situation. She handled everything quickly and expertly. I cannot thank her enough. I would not hesitate to recommend her in the future. – T

Stephanie is sensitive to the anxiety involved with being faced with a criminal charge. Her unique legal and social work training has proven to be valuable in negotiating joint resolutions with the Crown and successfully advocating for the utilization of means that serve to rehabilitate and re-integrate rather than punish individuals who have come into contact with the law.Outside of work, Stephanie Skinner volunteers with a number of community organizations dedicated to advancing social justice. She is also a yogi, dog lover, avid hiker, foodie and devil’s advocate.
