Before law school he earned his Bachelors of Arts at Simon Fraser University in criminology and legal studies. Roy was born and raised in the Lower Mainland. Before he was a lawyer Roy volunteered for the Student Legal Society of Edmonton providing disadvantaged individuals assistance in family disputes and residential tenancy proceedings. Roy also served as a tribunal member with the University of Alberta Student Union, where he was engaged with the enforcement and interpretation of university bylaws. Before law school, Roy volunteer providing assistance and support to homeless and impoverished individuals throughout the Tri-cities.
Roy is also actively involved with community groups in the Lower Mainland of BC. He sits on the board of directors with a local community center and in his spare time he teaches martial arts.
Roy is fluent in Cantonese.
