Victoria lawyer Elizabete Costa is a former Crown prosecutor with 16 years of experience in criminal law. Elizabete is a lawyer known for her dogged determination to protect those who are innocent and those who have been unfairly accused.
As a former Crown prosecutor, Elizabete is uniquely positioned to assess a case from both sides. Her experience with the Crown allows her to identify factors in a case that would weaken a prosecutor’s arguments in court. She has great negotiation skills, and can often bring a case to a successful resolution before a matter reaches trial.
Elizabete has experience in both criminal and administrative matters. She has worked in different areas of law from thefts, to arsons to murders. As a bonus, she is fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese.
As an immigrant to Canada, Elizabete understands firsthand the challenges that face those who are considering moving to a different country. Elizabete will represent you at all stages of immigration and citizenship. She can assist you in acquiring status in Canada, or in retaining that status. Whether you’re coming to Canada to be a business owner, or just to live, work or study, Elizabete can help you make that transition as smoothly as possible.
Before she was a lawyer, Elizabete worked at the Law Clinic in law school. There, she presented arguments in her first criminal trial and successfully cross-examined Toronto Police officers to obtain an acquittal for her client.
During her time in law school, Elizabete also took part in the first Innocence Project in Canada. The Innocence Project investigated cases of possible wrongful conviction to ensure the innocent are not unfairly punished, while the guilty remain uncaught. Elizabete was extremely concerned about sources of evidence known to be prone with errors, such as evidence from eyewitness accounts or from jailhouse informants. Her work was presented to the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
Originally from Portugal, Elizabete moved to Canada in 1989 and obtained her law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School out of York University, where she was research assistant to the school’s Criminal Law and Evidence professor, Diane Martin. She also has a background in real estate contracts.
